Mike Richmond took over as head coach of the Sparks Piranhas in October of 2001. He has been the Middle Distance Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the University of Nevada Wolf Pack Swim Team since December of 1999. Prior to coaching in Nevada, he was a longtime head coach in various cities in Texas, with some of the most highly regarded teams in the state. While in Texas, he was a seven-time Texas All Star coach, as well as serving on the State Championship committee and also as the Committee Chairman for the West Texas Zone.

He is highly regarded as one of the nation's foremost stroke technique coaches, and has written a book on strength and conditioning, technique and motivation in the sport of swimming.

His athletic career highlights include all star nominations in both baseball and swimming, as well as semi-professional La Crosse. He was a Junior Olympic qualifier and finalist, and was coached by Olympic Gold medallist Doug Russell as an age group athlete. Richmond has coached numerous Olympic level athletes, including Silver medallist Limin Liu and Bronze medallist Cathleen Rund. He has coached successful swimmers at all levels from age group (including several state champions), to high school (including the number 1 high school recruit in the nation), to college (including numerous conference champions and All-Americans).

Mike says, "I believe in creating a positive, upbeat and enthusiastic atmosphere at practices. Success is developed through a passion for the sport, and each practice session should be geared towards that goal. I believe God has blessed me with a wonderful career and life, and I am excited to see what He has in store for me at here at the Sparks Piranhas!"
